SafetyChain Board Director

Mr. Joseph Ueberroth is the founder and Managing Partner of the Bellwether Financial Group. Since 1997, he has overseen the firm’s investment strategy and its entry into both private equity and venture capital investing. Mr. Ueberroth has spent his career investing in businesses and at times has been the Chief Executive Officer of companies ranging from startups to companies with multinational operations to a publicly traded company.

Mr. Ueberroth is currently the Chairman of the Board of three companies and serves on the Board of Directors of an additional four companies. His current involvements range from agriculture to manufacturing to technology. Mr. Ueberroth received his BA from Dartmouth College and his EDP from the University of California, Irvine Graduate School of Management.


Executive Director and Co-Founder

Recognizing the growing global concern around the safety and quality of consumable goods, Walter “Wally” Smith founded SafetyChain Software to fill critical gaps in the enforcement of food safety and quality standards. Wally has an extensive history of turning start-up Software-as-a-Service ventures into industry leaders bringing strong value to customers and strong returns to investors.

Wally’s past ventures have included Enwisen, which he led to become the recognized leader of SaaS-based HR Service Delivery solutions, CEO of AOS and Advanced Analog as well as other successful technology innovators.


CEO and Co-Founder

Barry Maxon brings over 20 years software and consulting management experience to his role as CEO and President of SafetyChain. Barry inspires innovation while ensuring accountability and customer success.

Before his role as CEO and President, Barry led SafetyChain’s sales and consulting team facilitating the fast-growth and adoption of SafetyChain’s technologies in the marketplace. Prior to SafetyChain, Barry was an integral member of the executive team at Enwisen Software where he helped the company become a market-leader. He was a management consultant at A.T. Kearney helping companies optimize their operations and served as an officer in the US Navy.


SafetyChain Board Member

Mr. Karl L. Matthies serves as the President and Principal Partner of Bellagio Partners. Mr. Matthies is a consultant to companies in the consumer, e-commerce, and real estate industries and an investor in many start-up, successful companies. Prior to forming Bellagio, he was a Senior Partner in charge of consumer and real estate investment banking at Banc of America Securities, analyst at Robertson, Colman, Siebel and Weisel, and a founding member of Montgomery Securities.

Matthies was an I.I. ranked Hotel and Restaurant Analyst for nine years and also served as Banc of America Securities’ Research Director prior to assuming his investment banking role. Mr. Matthies served as a Director of RFS Hotel Investors, Inc., a General Partner of RFS Partnership LP, Director of The Cheesecake Factory Inc. from 2003 to 2007, and was a former board member of Enwisen, Inc., which was acquired by Infor. Mr. Matthies is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College and holds an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.

Mr. Alejandro N. Canelos is CEO of Apache Produce Imports, LLC in Nogales, AZ. Apache Produce imports fresh fruits and vegetables from Mexico for distribution throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Canelos is also a founder, owner, and officer of various farming operations in Mexico, including International Greenhouse Produce, S.A., one of the largest greenhouse vegetable producers in North America.

In addition to his private agribusiness activities, Mr. Canelos is a past Chairman of the Board of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas (FPAA), an association of U.S. companies involved in the importation and distribution of Mexican produce. Mr. Canelos received an A.B. in Biology, cum laude, from Harvard University in 1992.


SafetyChain Board Member

Dr. David Acheson is well known for his FDA role in leading the development of the 2007 Food Protection Plan, which served as a basis for the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Dr. Acheson continues to provide guidance and consultation to the food industry as founder and CEO of The Acheson Group (TAG). Prior to forming TAG, Dr. Acheson was a Partner at Leavitt Partners and oversaw the company’s Food and Import Safety Practice. Dr. Acheson also served as the Chief Medical Officer at the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, and joined the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as the Chief Medical Officer at the FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN).

Dr. Acheson practiced internal medicine and infectious diseases in the United Kingdom until 1987 when he moved to the New England Medical Center and became an Associate Professor at Tufts University in Boston, studying the molecular pathogenesis of foodborne pathogens. Dr. Acheson has published extensively and is internationally recognized both for his public health expertise in food safety and his research in infectious diseases. Dr. Acheson graduated from the University of London Medical School.
